Sandy Rosenthal Interview On 24, Jun 2022

"Sandy Rosenthal grew up in a rural area of Massachusetts. She started writing in August 2013 and finished in August 2018. She is also a podcast host and a citizen investigator. Her debut non-fiction, Words Whispered in Water has been much appreciated among the readers. She lives in New Orleans."
Where did you grow up? What is your favorite childhood memory?

I grew up in a rural area of Massachusetts. I played with frogs and snakes. My favorite memories are the extended family cookouts on those long warm summer days.

What was that one moment in your life when you realized that you wanted to write?

Someone else helped me see that I needed to write a book. My mentor and friend Ken McCarthy called me on the phone in summer of 2013 and told me I needed to further the reach of my nonprofit I had created in 2005 by writing a book. I started writing in August 2013 and finished in August of 2018.

Do you remember what your first piece of creative writing was? Tell us more about it.

For my work with my non profit Levees.org, I wrote a nomination for the National Register of Historic Places. Writing this historical document taught me how to write a researched article. This self-training, in turn, helped me to write a critically important journal article that would be published in 2015. That article, in turn, helped me to write my book, Words Whispered in Water.

Who all are a part of your family? How critical are they of your writing?

My family is my husband Steve, daughter Aliisa and two sons Mark and Stanford. All of them are critical of my writing, but with the healthy positive goal of wanting my writing to be successful.

What motivated you to leave your full-time job in marketing/ copywriting?

The demands of building a grassroots group "out of thin air" with no paid staff had become a 7-day a week job.

What is the grassroots group Levees.org about?

When the levees broke during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, anyone old enough to watch and understand television was watching the event unfold. The mission of Levees.org is making sure that everyone who watched that event understands truly why the levees broke.

Your novels serve as escapes for the readers. What inspires you to write these stories?

Nearly two thirds of the American people live in counties protected by levees. The readers of my book need to understand that they too could be in danger of levee failure.

Who makes your book covers for you? Where do you get the ideas and pictures for your book covers?

I was fortunate that a colleague recommended M Styborski. He snapped the photograph in the Lower Ninth Ward after the breach of the Industrial Canal and created the chilling water effect using reverse photography.

Who is your author role model?

James Cobb who wrote the wonderful book called Flood of Lies: The St. Rita's Nursing Home Tragedy. His book was highly data dense, but it also included lots of human stories, many of them humorous.

In what ways do you try to better understand the craft of writing?

I try to better understand what keeps a reader engaged, even when the material becomes complicated.

What motivates people to write memoirs of themselves?

I wrote my book as a memoir because I myself was a survivor of the catastrophic levee breach event. I also enjoy reading books that are written "in the first person."

Women in romance novels are mostly portrayed as weak and submissive, damsels in distress who need to be saved. What is your take on such representation of females?

Any book that represents women as lesser human beings does harm to the entire human race. I am currently reading a book about the repression of women in history called When Women Stood by Alexandra Allred. I will be writing a testimonial for the book and the author.

What would your dream vacation be like?

A vacation where the food is amazing, there is no English spoken, there is lots to see and do, and many ways to exercise!

Which is your next book to be published? Tell us what it is about.

I look forward to writing a reprint of my book that is 50% longer than the original.
